Abstract

Combining a contemporary ethnographic perspective with a review of historical records, the article extends Peter Gow’s re-reading of the ex-Cocama phenomenon in the Western Amazon. It argues that the foundation of the Amazonian Peruvian town of Requena at the beginning of the 20th century took place during an important historical moment in the region. Within the post-rubber boom context, schools became a particularly important idiom that enabled Requena’s growth as the centre of education and modernity. The paper investigates relations between the widespread desire for education in the Ucamara region, and Cocama descendants’ and other “ribereño” ex-Mainas peoples’ specific notions of towns, identity, descent, and social aspirations.

Translated Abstract

Combinando una perspectiva etnográfica contemporánea con una revisión de los registros históricos, el artículo amplía la relectura de Peter Gow sobre el fenómeno ex-cocama en la Amazonía occidental. Sostiene que la fundación de la ciudad amazónica peruana de Requena a comienzos del siglo XX tuvo lugar en un momento histórico crucial para la región. En el contexto posterior al auge del caucho, las escuelas se convirtieron en un idioma particularmente importante que permitió el crecimiento de Requena como centro de educación y modernidad. El artículo investiga las relaciones entre el deseo generalizado de educación en la región Ucamara y las nociones específicas de los descendientes cocama y de otros pueblos “ribereños” ex-maynas acerca de las ciudades, la identidad, la descendencia y las aspiraciones sociales.
