Abstract
In this thesis I will introduce Polyphemus as he exists in Odyssey 9 as my point of departure, then analyze the Cyclops' appearance in Theocritus' Idylls 6 and 11, Vergil's Aeneid 3, and Ovid's Metamorphoses 13 and 14. I will focus primarily on how Homeric allusions and additional characters affect Polyphemus' reception in epic and pastoral literature.
