Abstract
This unit is meant to be taught at the beginning of the year. It begins by having students identify what a community is, and how learning about others helps to build a community. Students will learn the beginning stages of the writing process: how to identify nouns/subjects, verbs/predicates, and how to write in complete sentences. The culminating activity will be writing an All About Me paragraph and illustration, to then be compiled into a class book titled, Our First Grade Community. Sharing their own stories at the end of the unit will allow students to gain a better understanding of each other, who they are as a class, and they will be able to answer the question: Why is it important to share our stories with each other?
