Abstract

This understanding by design unit attempts to guide 8th grade U.S. History students to consider their rights and responsibilities afforded them in the Constitution. This unit has student analyze and consider constitutional rights, as well as those included in amendments and supreme court decisions. The performance assessment requires students to consider the relationship between rights and responsibilities, and our school and national identities. Students will complete a menu of assessment items covering the principles of the Constitution, as well as conduct interviews of alumni of their middle school. Students will attempt to answer the essential question: What is the national identity, and how does it relate to each of us as individuals?
