Abstract
A critical analysis and creative appropriation of King Lear into a modern short story. "What We Ought to Say" presents Lear as Mr. Le, a Vietnamese immigrant who came to the United States after the Vietnam War with his wife and daughters. By the time the story begins, Le has amassed a large fortune transforming an empty lot into a popular Asian shopping center. But while he is financially successful, his personal life and family relationships are strained and dysfunctional. When Le slips in the bathtub, his life begins falling apart.
