Abstract

This paper documents the design process, construction, and results of Hydrofracing Group A's bench-top system. The paper describes the purpose and background for the project and the unit operations required to treat the wastewater to levels determined by the EPA for drinking water. The group's design started with an adsorption column filled with activated charcoal, followed by a reverse osmosis membrane, and ended with an ion exchanger. To test the performance of each operation, the group performed gas chromatography, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, total dissolved solids, and pH tests on the water coming from sampling ports placed after each operation. The tests showed that the bench-top system removed all organics from the water and reduced the amount of ions from around 35000 ppm to about 10 ppm.
