Abstract

This paper analyzes two cases of resistance by Kukama workers within the debt slavery system of habilitación in the Peruvian Amazon during the first half of the twentieth century. It discusses the similarities and differences between the two cases, and positions the workers and their accounts of events and agency within the historical, social and cosmological framework of the time and region. Through the examples studied here, the hierarchies, power dynamics, spirituality, lifestyles, traditions, and cultural changes that shaped Kukama communities at the time become visible from an emic perspective. The paper places special emphasis on how historical events are interpreted through oral transmission within a specific cultural context.

Este artículo analiza dos casos de resistencia de trabajadores kukamas en el sistema de habilitación (esclavitud por deudas) en la Amazonía peruana, durante la primera mitad del siglo veinte. Se discuten las similitudes y diferencias entre los dos casos, buscando posicionar a los trabajadores y su perspectiva sobre los eventos y sobre su agencia en el contexto histórico, social y cosmológico de los tiempos y de la región. A través de los ejemplos aquí estudiados, las jerarquías, las dinámicas de poder, la espiritualidad, las tradiciones y los cambios culturales que marcaron el desenvolvimiento de las comunidades kukamas durante ese período, se vuelven visibles desde una perspectiva émica. Se presta especial atención a la interpretación de eventos históricos que se produce en un contexto cultural específico a través de la transmisión oral.
