Abstract
This lecture was given on April 16th, 2026, at St Andrews University, as the 2nd Peter Gow Memorial Lecture. Its aim is not only to pay tribute to a great anthropologist who died prematurely, but also to explore a fundamental aspect of his work. Namely, the fact that Peter Gow developed what we might call an “ethnographic theory of mixture”. This theory is elaborated here through a comparison between Peter Gow’s work and my own, with a particular focus on what I have termed the Afro-indigenous relationship, counter-miscegenation, and counter-syncretism.

Esta conferência foi apresentada em 16 de abril de 2026, na Universidade de St Andrews, como a 2ª Peter Gow Memorial Lecture. Seu objetivo não é apenas prestar homenagem a um grande antropólogo, precocemente falecido, mas também explorar uma dimensão fundamental de sua obra. A saber, o fato de que Peter Gow desenvolveu o que poderíamos denominar uma “teoria etnográfica da mistura”. A explicitação dessa teoria é aqui efetuada a partir de uma comparação entre o trabalho de Peter Gow e aquele por mim desenvolvido, com um foco especial no que denominei relação afroindígena, contramestiçagem e contrassincretismo.
