Abstract

This special issue in the Bilingual Research Journal is a result of an Invited Presidential Session that took place at the 2018 American Education Research Association’s (AERA) annual conference in New York. The panel was organized by Oscar Jiménez-Castellanos. Because 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Bilingual Education Act (BEA), the featured presentations at AERA were delivered by distinguished Latina bilingual education scholars: Cristina Alfaro, San Diego State University; Kathy Escamilla, University of Colorado Boulder; Maria Franquíz, University of Utah; Patricia Gándara, University of California, Los Angeles; Ofelia García, The Graduate Center of the City University of New York; and Guadalupe Valdés, Stanford University. This coeditors’ introduction provides a broad historical reflection of the BEA followed by summaries of the six articles contributed by the aforementioned Latina bilingual education scholars.
